How have you spent your day?

How have you spent your day?

The 29th February, also known as leap day or year in the Gregorian calender, only occurs every four years. This means that we gain an extra day in the year.

In the Chinese calender, leap years will only occur in the years of the Monkey, Dragon and Rat.

A leap day is observed because a complete revolution around the Sun takes slightly longer than 365 days. It compensates for this lag, realigning the calendar with the Earth’s position in the solar system; otherwise, seasons would occur in a different time than intended in the calendar year.

The Gregorian calendar repeats itself every 400 years, including 97 leap days, which is exactly 20,871 weeks. Over this period, February 29 falls on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday 13 times each; 14 times each on Friday and Saturday; and 15 times each on Monday and Wednesday. The order of the leap days is: Thursday, Tuesday, Sunday, Friday, Wednesday, Monday, and Saturday.

A person who is born on February 29 may be called a “leapling” or a “leap-year baby”. In non-leap years, some leaplings celebrate their birthday on either February 28 or March 1, while others only observe birthdays on the authentic intercalary date, February 29.

How have you spent your day?

Here at Masteflex, we are all hard at work to make sure we get your orders out on time.

Have you already bought that special present, or are you planning a surprise?

Hayle Bishop Valentine whose day this is

All the Ayre is thy Diocese
And all the chirping Queristers
And other birds ar thy parishioners
Thou marryest every yeare
The Lyrick Lark, and the graue whispering Doue,
The Sparrow that neglects his life for loue,
The houshold bird with the redd stomacher
Thou makst the Blackbird speede as soone,
As doth the Goldfinch, or the Halcyon
The Husband Cock lookes out and soone is spedd
And meets his wife, which brings her feather-bed.
This day more cheerfully than ever shine
This day which might inflame thy selfe old Valentine.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Happy Chinese New Year!

Today is the celebration of the Chinese New Year, the year of the Monkey.

Chinese New Year is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. It is also known as the Spring Festival, the literal translation of the modern Chinese name. Celebrations traditionally run from the evening preceding the first day, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month. The first day of the New Year falls on the new moon between 21 January and 20 February. This year the celebrations take place on the 8th February.

The personality of the Monkey

People born in the Year of the Monkey are characterised as quick-witted, curious, innovative and mischievous, but it is also believed to be one of the most unlucky years in the Chinese calendar.

The general image of people in this zodiac sign is of always being smart, clever and intelligent, especially in their career and wealth.

They are lively, flexible, quick-witted and versatile. In addition, their gentleness and honesty bring them an everlasting love life. Although they were born with enviable skills, they still have several shortcomings, such as an impetuous temper and a tendency to look down upon others.

  • Strengths: sociable, innovative, enthusiastic, self-assured
  • Weaknesses: suspicious, cunning, selfish, arrogant, jealous

Lucky Signs for the Monkey

  • Lucky numbers: 1, 7, 8

Pancakes all day!

Pancakes all day!

Get your pans ready for Tuesday 9th February.

Pancake Day has been celebrated by Britons for centuries.  Known also as Shrove Tuesday, its exact date, rather confusingly, changes every year, because it is determined by when Easter falls. But it is always the day preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), and always falls in February or March. Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent.

The most famous pancake race, at Olney in Buckinghamshire, has been held since 1445. The contestants, traditionally women, carry a frying pan and race over a 415-yard course to the finishing line. The rules are strict: contestants have to toss their pancake at both the start and the finish, as well as wear an apron and a scarf. Traditionally, when men want to participate, they must dress up as a housewife (usually an apron and a bandanna). The race is followed by a church service.

How to make the perfect pancakes.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy

Do you have a favourite topping or maybe take turns on flipping the mixture?

Here at Masterflex, jam, sugar, lemon juice or maple syrup are some of the more popular choices to have with pancakes.

He has worked at Masterflex for 10 years.

On a daily basis you can hear Karl singing to the radio, whilst setting the equipment up ready for the hoses to be made.

He enjoyed an eventful night out in Manchester with his friends over the weekend but is now hard at work making the hoses.

Give Masterflex a call, place an order and Karl maybe the one who manufactures your product.

Clinical waste and waste incineration

Clinical waste and waste incineration

waste-management-skip

What is clinical waste and waste removal?

Definition:

Clinical waste consists of medical waste that could pose a threat to public health unless properly disposed of. It is a category of hazardous waste, and has to be collected under tightly controlled conditions and disposed of by incineration. It cannot be put with normal rubbish. The process is legally enforced by strict government regulations.

Clinical waste is defined in the Controlled Waste Regulations 1992. Any other waste arising from medical, nursing, dental, veterinary, pharmaceutical or similar practice, investigation, treatment, care, teaching or research, or the collection of blood for transfusion, being waste which may cause infection to any person coming into contact with it.

It refers to any waste that consists wholly or partly of:

  • Human or animal tissue, blood or bodily fluids,
  • Dressings or swabs,
  • Unwanted medicines and other pharmaceutical products,
  • Used syringes, needles and blades (‘contaminated sharps’),
  • Excretions.

How should clinical waste be removed?

Clinical waste should be placed in secure clinical waste bins, Domestic Waste Bins, Sanitary Bins, Nappy Bins and Recycling Bins. There are various companies that manufacture products to suit this industry and take the contents of the bin away to be incinerated.

How can we help you remove your clinical waste?

Masterflex manufacture a range of durable hard wearing hoses that can can be used in the incineration process. If you are in the incineration industry and have requirements for flexible hose and ductings, we will be happy to hear from you.
