This weekend sees the Monaco Grand Prix.

monaco_gp_map-2016

What a Circuit!!!! ……..…it consists on the city Streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine, which include the famous harbour.  The Circuit has many elevation changes and tight corners and the narrow course makes it one of the demanding tracks in Formula One racing.  It has been named as an exceptional location of glamour and prestige!!!

The first “Grand Prix Automobile do Monaco” was by invite only and was held on the 14th April 1929.  The first ever winner was William Grover-Williams, driving a Bugatti.

Graham Hill was known as “Mr Monaco” due to his five Monaco victories back in the 60’s, however this record was beaten by the late Ayrton Senna, a record of six times back in 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993.

Let’s hope Lewis Hamilton MBE, last year’s winner, can excel to victory once more!!!!

Roger Bannister………the first man ever to run a mile in less than four minutes!!!!!

images

Breaking the four minute barrier was first achieved on the 6th May 1954 at Oxford University’s Iffley Road Track, by Roger Bannister at the age of 25 years old.  The actual time was 3.59.4 minutes – that’s an average running speed of 15mph………………The track was later named after him!!

In 1975 he was quite rightly knighted for his legendary achievement and he became Sir Roger Gilbert Bannister.  He became the first Chairman of the Sports Council (now call Sport England) and went on to become a Neurologist and Master of Pembroke College in Oxford, before retiring in 1993.

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF THE GRAND NATIONAL!!!!!

images

We loved the Grand National in our house………….at 3.00pm on a Saturday afternoon, live on BBC1, the Grand National would take place, but we never watched it at home!  My Dad would go through the “pull out” in the paper and contemplate which horses he would lay his bets on.  Then he’d turn to us kids and say “pick a horse”.   I always picked one that reminded me of someone or a place I had visited.  We’d all get ready, as a family and get our coats on whilst my Dad went to put his bets on in town, then we’d make a dash to the local Dixons shop and watch the Grand National on their TV’s………..in colour!!!!  There would be a huge crowd all cheering their horses on and waving their tickets……….Good luck for Saturday and may the best horse win!!!!

Happy 100th Birthday to Vera Lynn…. The forces “Sweetheart”…!!!!

Image result for dame vera lynn

Vera Welch was born on 20 March 1917 in East Ham, part of east London.  By the age of seven, Vera was singing in working men’s clubs.  When she turned 11, Vera took her grandmother’s maiden name of Lynn as a stage name.

In 1936, when she was 19, she had her first solo record – called Up the Wooden Hill to Bedfordshire. By the age of 22 she had sold more than a million records.  However, it was during World War Two that her reputation was made. She frequently sang to the troops at morale-boosting concerts, becoming known as “The Forces’ Sweetheart”. One off her most popular songs was “We’ll Meet Again” which was released in 1939.

She was appointed OBE in 1969, made a Dame in 1975, and a Companion of Honour in 2016.

What an amazing life this Lady has had.  Happy Birthday Dame Vera Lynn from Masterflex
