Happy Diwali

diwali

Masterflex would like to wish everyone a Happy Diwali.

What is Diwali?

The term Diwali means Festival of Lights and is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in Autumn. The five-day festival of Diwali is one of the most significant festivals in the Indian culture.

Diwali is one of the largest and brightest festivals in India. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of good over evil. The preparations and rituals typically extend over a five-day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika. In the Gregorian calendar, Diwali falls between mid-October and mid-November.

Did you know before Diwali night, people clean, renovate, and decorate their homes and offices. On Diwali night, Hindus dress up in new clothes or their best outfit, light up lamps and candles, inside and outside their home, participate in family prayers.During Diwali, families and friends share sweets, dried fruit and gifts, and many give food and goods to those who are less fortunate and in need.

For many Indians, Diwali honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and people will start the new business year at Diwali and some will say prayers to the goddess for a prosperous year ahead.

After the prayers, fireworks follow, then a family feast including mithai (sweets), and an exchange of gifts between family members and close friends. Deepavali also marks a major shopping period in nations where it is celebrated.

Diwali is an important festival for Hindus. The name of festive days as well as the rituals of Diwali vary significantly among Hindus, based on the region of India. In many parts of India, the festivities start with Dhanteras in Northern & Western part of India, followed by Naraka Chaturdasi on second day, Deepavali on the third day, Diwali Padva dedicated to wife–husband relationship on the fourth day, and festivities end with Bhau-beej dedicated to sister–brother bond on the fifth day. Dhanteras usually falls eighteen days after Dussehra.

Remembrance Day

shall we not forget

Remembrance Sunday is approaching. Have you got your Poppy?

What is Remembrance Day?

Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states and some other countries, since the end of the First World War to remember the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.

Remembrance Day (Veterans Day in the United States) is observed on 11 November in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”, in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning.

“At the 11th hour” refers to the passing of the 11th hour, or 11:00 am.

The memorial evolved out of Armistice Day, which continues to be marked on the same date. The initial Armistice Day was observed at Buckingham Palace, commencing with King George V hosting a “Banquet in Honour of the President of the French Republic during the evening hours of 10 November 1919. The first official Armistice Day was subsequently held on the grounds of Buckingham Palace the following morning.

Remembrance Day in the United Kingdom (UK) honours the heroic efforts, achievements and sacrifices that were made in past wars. The main observance is on the second Sunday in November, but 2 minutes of silence is also made on November 11. Remembrance Day is an observance and not a public holiday in the UK, though many businesses may temporarily pause activity at 11am for 2 minutes of silence on November 11.

The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem “In Flanders Fields”.  These poppies, the seeds of which can lie dormant for years, until the ground is disturbed, bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I; their brilliant red colour became a symbol for the blood spilled in the war.

Artificial poppies were first sold in Britain in 1921 to raise money for the Earl Haig Fund in support of ex-servicemen and the families of those who had died in the conflict. They were supplied by Anna Guérin, who had been manufacturing the flowers in France to raise money for war orphans. Selling poppies proved so popular that in 1922 the British Legion founded a factory – staffed by disabled ex-servicemen – to produce its own. It continues to do so today.

Other charities sell poppies in different colours, each with their own meaning but all to commemorate the losses of war. White poppies, for example, symbolise peace without violence and purple poppies are worn to honour animals killed in conflict.

The poppy continues to be sold worldwide to raise money and to remember those who lost their lives in the First World War and in subsequent conflicts.

Here at Masterflex, we will be wearing our poppies while continuing to manufacturer high-tech flexible hose, ducting and connecting systems.

Today, our products are in use throughout industry, helping to solve our customer’s many different application requirements. Masterflex Technical Hoses Limited can also design and manufacture a hose or ducting product to a customers’ specific requirement.

Shaken not stirred…

spectre1208141280jpg-398894_1280w

Will you be watching the new James Bond film Spectre?

The new film had it’s premier on Monday 26th October. The spy thriller, starring Daniel Craig featuring Sam Smith’s Writing’s On The Wall as the theme music.

SPECTRE gets its name from the acronym for “Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion.” Ever since its foundation, its main goal has been to undermine the governments of the world, in hopes of one day ruling it. Some of their most infamous plots have involved the attempted radiating of Fort Knox’s gold supply, the ransom of two nuclear warheads found off the coast of the Bahamas, as well as various plots involving the sabotage of the space program.

Did you know that…

  •  SPECTRE is on track to be one the most expensive films ever made, costing over $300 million.
  • SPECTRE establishes a link between all of Daniel Craig’s Bond movies up to this point, as it features both documents from Bond’s childhood found in the ruins of Skyfall Lodge and the return of Mr White. Skyfall had no apparent link to both plots of Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale before.
  • Directors Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, David Yates, Danny Boyle, Shane Black and Christopher Nolan were being considered to direct the film until Sam Mendes decided to come back after Skyfall.
  • Sam Mendes confirmed SPECTRE will be his last Bond film.

Here are some more facts about the film.

 1. While shooting in Rome, the Mayor allowed producers to shut the busiest road in the country off so that crew could film the high-speed car chase scene.
2. The crew of Spectre travelled to Morocco, Austria and Mexico to shoot the film.
3. Not just a road, but even a plaza in Mexico was shut for four days to shoot huge sequences in the film. The opening scene in Mexico shows the Dead Festivities, and it took six months to make costumes for the thousands of people involved.
4. Lucia, the character played by Monica Bellucci, is the James Bond’s oldest love interest at 50.
Bond is known for using many gadgets throughout the film in order to succeed at the task, and here at Masterflex we have our own set of gadgets, specialised tools and machinery to manufacture hoses and ductings for individual requirements.

Time to gain an hour!!!

clocks_990a

Clocks go back Sunday 29th October

What is the one thing people want more of?????

Well if it is Time that you are wanting then you are in luck!, as we will all be gaining an extra hour on Sunday. Yip Pee!!!!

The clocks should be put back 60 minutes at 1am on Sunday October 29. When the clocks go back, the UK will be back onto Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Mobile phones and other devices connected to the Internet should change automatically. Other devices, like cookers and ovens will need to be changed manually.

Clocks then move forward again on March.  The reason for changing the clocks twice a year is known as Daylight Saving Time and was brought in from 1907 to get people out of bed earlier during summer when it gets light from 4 to 5am even when the clocks have gone back. But there have been calls to scrap it entirely because of the adverse impact of nights drawing in earlier during winter.

So don’t forget Sunday 29th Oct to turn your clocks back 1 hour!

It’s back to work for everyone at Masterflex (hopefully everyone will turn in on time) manufacturing hoses and ducting to suit your individual requirements

Trafalgar Day

Trafalgar Day

Today is the celebration of the victory won by the Royal Navy, commanded by Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson. He oversaw the combined French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805 at Cape Trafalgar, off the coast of Spain. Today it is commonly referred to as Trafalgar Day.

The battle had massive repercussions for Napoleon’s France and the future of the British Empire. Admiral Lord Nelson commanded the fleet from HMS Victory but was mortally wounded in the engagement, so the event also commemorates and celebrates his life.

Wreaths are normally laid at Lord Nelson’s tomb in St Paul’s Cathedral and on board the Victory at Portsmouth on Trafalgar Day.

The historic signal “England expects….” is sent from the ship at 8am followed by a memorial service on board.

At Trafalgar Square in London, the Sea Cadets usually put on a display to showcase their skills at 11 am before marching to the Wellington Barracks on Birdcage Walk.

Traditionally this event has seen bands salute – the display lasts over an hour and has been a highlight of the Sea Cadets’ calendar for over a century.

Each year around 500 members of the Sea Cadets march from Horse Guards’ Parade to Nelson’s Column to mark Trafalgar Day.

Here at Masterflex, we are continuing with our legacy of manufacturing hoses and ducting for a wide range of industries.

If you use hoses in your job, but are unsure which type you use, contact us and we can help you in choosing the right product.
